Families of Spirit
“We all have a soul family, the ones that ignite and support our truth. They feed something in us we weren't aware we needed before them. They'll make you face yourself and become raw and authentic. You'll roam but never too far from each other for the invisible thread of connectedness; once opened can never be locked. They are the ones who will see you through all the important days of your life no matter what tributes and trials you face. They'll just be there, in presence, in synchronicity or in spirit.”
― Nikki Rowe
As we go about each day and face the trials and tribulations of life, we confide in those whom we believe to know who we truly are. This connection comes in many forms, be it through family, friends, partners, siblings, and so forth, each with their own unique emotional signature. Now, being that the universe works in polarities, every collective bond must come with one that is rooted in conflict, be it internal or external. We are all familiar with external conflict, be it in opposing views, interests, power dynamics, you name it. These interactions are quite apparent. However, one aspect that is often overlooked is the metaphysical basis of human connection, and that is the pursuit of a higher, shared purpose.
We may believe that having similar interests, hobbies, or temperaments is enough to sustain our desire for closeness, but these foundations only speak to the surface of our being. Deep within our subconscious, I believe that there is something that yearns for the hidden potential beneath our interactions. Perhaps it is the ideal that governs our higher values, the vision that shows us our role in humanity. Yet, striving for connection founded in profundity seems like a fruitless pursuit, one that is only possible in myth and fairy tales. We must question as to whether this is bound by our insistence on clinging to paradigms solely based on contentment.
So what can we do to attract these higher connections into our lives? For one, we must look within and appreciate both the goodness and the imperfection that is our psyche. As we accept the equal importance of our inner wounds and strengths, we will be able to attract specific individuals into our lives. These people will have travelled a similar existential path to the one you have travelled. They will have done the inner development work necessary to pursue this vision without ego. Therefore, you must be committed to expanding your own consciousness before setting out to accomplish this purpose together. As the law of attraction would say, “You attract not what you desire, but who you are.”
With all that said, the promise of uninhibited expression that comes with the idealized image of deeper connection, or “soul groups”, may prevent us from seeing the value inherent in the present moment. The chasing of this dream, if originating from a place of escapism and discontent, can undermine our appreciation of the profundity contained within this very moment. Nevertheless, the pursuit of existential intimacy and the embracement of the present is a contrast that must be balanced at every step of our lives. When we start to see through this false dichotomy, the family we desire will come and show us the meaning that is both inherent and possible in the human condition.
